Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Whenever a prominent awards ceremony nears, you'll find a demand to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge game development, creating some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
