During the period of several weeks, the nation's leader began displaying the public his plans for an ornate dance hall two times larger compared to the White House and then began solo dismantling the East Wing to build it.
He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and growing, and this week a study projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. However nothing as distinctive. No previous president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple the nation's most affluent, nearly all of which conduct transactions with the government.
We went from 'the gentle will obtain the world' to 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive seek to颠覆 the established notion regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who might not perceive it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up as conventional Protestant believers.
We have witnessed throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we grew up with into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus of the gospels calls for a kind of radical love focused on the poor has consistently rendered Christianity something of a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but because of its natural unconventionality needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so dominant that it essentially blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest of Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the persistent defiance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has been great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We will need to persist with it, and in the same spirit, featuring US banners throughout each rally and calls to the highest qualities in US history.
